The existing living room ceiling (left side of lefthand "before" photo) was low, as was the rafter pitch, which would not have provided enough height for a cathedral ceiling. As a result the roof was taken off and a new one was built with a steeper pitch, allowing for a 14' high cathedral ceiling. The new ridge beam and rafters were extended over the back deck to create the new porch on the rear of the house.
